The Man of Mode (or Sir Fopling Flutter) is possibly the most outrageous, witty and thought-provoking comedy of Restoration Theatre. The play holds up a mirror to a libertarian society obsessed with fashion, promiscuity, sex and celebrity. Rather like today! This production mischieviously makes the connections as it drifts from the world of Charles II into the 21st Century. Using the original text and drawing on both Restoration and modern conventions of behaviour and gesture, the production questions whether there can be any truth in love when we are obsessed with sensuality and appearance.
The Man of Mode is performed by students on the BA (Hons) Performing Arts degree at the University of Wales, Newport.
