The exhibition opening on September 3 is expected to be a highlight of the autumn programme, linking with the community’s current interest in environmental issues.
The final selection of 47 artists– well over 100 entries were received – was made by Professor Richard Weston, of the School of Architecture at Cardiff University, Mrs Cerys Griffiths of Penarth and Alice Randone of the Washington Gallery.
Artists who have submitted entries have found ingenious ways to re-use materials, especially melted plastic, to create many new objects. An intriguing aspect of the exhibition is the range of materials deployed: sculptures from dishwashing sponges, vinyl records melted to an organic shape, food cans converted in spectacular fashion (by established artist Helga Prosser) to a metre-high figure.
Reworked 2 also sees many artists choose to make clothing items from paper, denim or packaging. An entire outfit has been made from used cassette ribbon by a Bristol based artist. One of the most intricate submissions was a dress sewn together from 10,000 clothes labels.
Images of entries – mostly electronic to fit with the overall environmental messages the exhibition wishes to convey – came from around UK, especially from Manchester, London and the South West; about half the submissions were from Wels- based artists.
Accompanying each exhibit is a statement from the makers, most of whom are articulate and passionate about their imaginative recycling of waste or surplus. The exhibition will move to Cyfarthfa Castle in November 2008. The prizewinners’ presentation will take place during this time.
