Primary Ties

At the Andrew Lamont Gallery, Theatr Brycheiniog.

‘Primary Ties’ is a joint exhibition of contemporary stained glass and fine art, featuring the work of award-winning glass artist Angharad Whitfield and painter Elenyd Whitfield.

Trained at The International Glass Centre, and having apprenticeships at the best stained glass studios in the UK and Germany, Angharad has received ‘The Ashton Hill Award’ and the prestigious ‘Award For Excellence’ from The Worshipful Company of Glaziers and Painters of Glass, London, and ‘The Frederick Stewart Memorial Award’ from the Worshipful Company of Glass Sellers. She will shortly be exhibiting at The Cochrane Gallery in London as part of The British Society of Master Glass Painters’ annual exhibition (of which she is a member), at the Eisch Gallery, Frauenau, Germany and in Corning, New York, during the Glass Art Society Conference next year.
She has also been selected to exhibit at the foremost showcase of excellence in contemporary glass in the UK- The British Glass Biennale- this August.
Combining the traditional tools of stained glass with modern techniques, Angharad creates fresh and vibrant contemporary work, full of movement and colour.
Wall-mounted lightboxes, three-dimensional forms and window-hanging panels will be on display in the upper gallery of the theatre, filling it with colour and light. Her pieces are inspired by written and performed works, often drawing on her love of Welsh culture, mythology and storytelling in her designs.

Exhibiting alongside Angharad is Elenyd Whitfield, who works in the medium of watercolour on canvas, focusing primarily on portraiture. Adopting a detailed and atmospheric painting style, she creates realistic portraits that are imbued with immediacy and vigour. Her collection of work for this exhibition is comprised of a range of subjects, including icons of jazz and pop music, painted in vivid colour and in monochrome.
Elenyd has spent a number of years developing a highly nuanced and naturalistic technique, gaining inspiration from contemporary fine artists, such as Jenny Saville and Lucien Freud. She has undertaken a variety of private commissions, and has recently been invited to exhibit her work at a festival celebrating the exchange between Brazilian and Welsh culture, organised by the society ‘Brasil in Wales’, to be held in Cardiff in November.
